Traditional and Scumptious was set up in May 1995 by Dawn Carvey following her redundancy from HSBC Bank the previous year.

Since the inception of the business when Dawn started with her parent's wedding cake recipe, she has developed many other fruit cake recipes using such ingredients as apricots and chopped glazed ginger for the Multi Award Winning Apricot & Ginger Fruit Cake, to the artisan produced award winning beers of the Wensleydale Brewery at Bellerby near Leyburn.  Dawn uses only the finest ingredients which are carefully prepared and soaked in the finest alcohol, which is reflected in the flavour and consistency of her fruit cakes.

Dawn holds four Gold and two Bronze Awards from the Great Taste Awards, as well as winning the Good Food competition in 2003, runner-up in the Waitrose Small Producer Awards in 2004 and being runner-up in the Yorkshire Post/Harvey Nichols Taste of Yorkshire Awards in 2007.

Being an active promoter of baking and, in recent years childrens cookery, she runs Kids in the Kitchen and has now launched the Traditional & Scumptious School of Baking.
